Did you see The Tree of Utah next to the highway about twenty miles to the east? It caused quite a stir when it was built, on account of the perceived ratio of expense to aesthetic value (as judged by the people of Utah, who had to pay for it).
We called it the "Mold Spores" because it looks like mold as viewed under a microscope. We had a game of trying to estimate how far away the Mold Spores were when we first sighted them on the horizon. The game got complicated on sunny days because mirages would either conceal or appear to move the Mold Spores.
Interstate 80. At about mile marker 5 there is a scenic viewpoint from which you can gaze out over the salt flats. The best view is to the north (pictured).
Excellent! I was wondering why I hadn't seen that before, then remembered I dropped from 80 down to 15 in Utah, so I missed that western part of I-80 on that trip! I guess I just gotta go back.
