In Rochester NY
Jun. 9th, 2010 07:59 pmJust arrived in Rochester NY for a business meeting tomorrow; will return to SFO tomorrow early evening. Flights were relatively uneventful.
When I checked in at the car rental kiosk, the agent noticed my mala and asked if I was Buddhist. I said yes and she asked me to wait while she read a quote about mind, action and character that had come to her via email that day. I knew the quote. I smiled and handed her my mala. At first she refused. It's a small, wrist-sized one with wooden beads and a slightly stretched out elastic string. I told her it would make me happy if she would accept it. She glowed and told me she had to give me a hug and ran out from behind the counter to do so.
After a day of traveling and noise that hug was so welcome.
I told her, I've learned two things in Buddhism: Be gentle with yourself and don't always believe what you think. She smiled at me.
Thank you Susan of National Rental Car. You made my day. These moments are what I enjoy most about travel.
