Former Mrs. is taking the TV (among other things.) Do I buy a new TV? The last time I watched the TV was probably in April. Of course, I am a gadget whore and would want a 42" 1080p HD Samsung like we have now.

TV is highly overrated. I've done some correlations and find that just the act of owing a TV is inversely correlated with success. None of my friends IRL have TV's, all are much more successful that I am, and I do own a TV. TV in any form is a waste of time.

I mostly agree with this, except that sometimes I need enforced downtime (which, I have learned the hard way, is not a waste of time), and TV can provide that.

Our choice is a computer in the living room. The Mac mini is unobtrusive, i don't suppose the monitors get as big as giant TV monitors but it suits us, and it's wired into the stereo sound system so the sound is just fine. TED talks, netflix, frontline, daily show, & DVDs for us. And then we have a back up machine if something happens to my computer. (Christine has plenty of computers.) FWIW.

I have a TV. It sits in my livingroom under a piece of pretty fabric. ;)

Try going without one for a while, see if you miss it - you can always go out and get one later.

Anything you'd want to watch on DVD can be viewed on a laptop? Likewise for broadcast clips, via YouTube? TVs themselves have become superfluous, IMO, other than having a big screen for group viewing of sports events together.

Why not wait five months, then decide based on the experience? By then, if you decide you want one, holiday sales will be starting.

For me, I find them useless. The only two shows I watch (sporadically) are available on-line, and I watch movies on the computer. The only reason I would even consider buying a TV now is so I can hook my Amigo up to it and read books in REALLY large print. :)

I think I'd go retro instead of geek and try to find a huge black and white tube. Retro is kind of geeky these days.

Otherwise, going without a TV is kind of fashionably different these days, too. People would come to your house and sense that something is different and it would just bother them until they figured it out, if they ever did. That's always fun.

I thrive on video games for my mental happiness, of late. I would get the big fuckin' TV, an X-Box 360, and some fun RPGs and such. Also, I use my TV for Animal Planet and DVDs of seasons of favourite TV shows.

It is nice to have a TV, even if you don't watch broadcasts. HD TVs also make great monitors. Nowadays, you should be able to find something very nice for a reasonable price.

I would suggest you use your computer to watch TV shows. If you find you would rather have or just need a TV, then by all means to get one. If you don't, one less item to clutter your place.

If you're not used to living alone, having the noise can be nice -- but I suppose you'd have that with the computer. I *am* used to living alone, but I still like the noise. It drowns out the neighbors; sometimes it lulls me to sleep.
